Anime - Japanimation, a specific style of animation, usually characterized by mouths that simply move, as opposed to forming to words, and large eyes.
AU - Alternate Universe.
Bashing - Demeaning a certain character in the fic.
Bishies - Shortened form of bishounen or bishoujo. Usually used towards boys.
Bishoujo - Translates into "pretty girl" in Japanese.
Bishounen - Translates into "pretty boy" in Japanese.
Citrus - A fanfiction where there are sexual situations, but no actual sex. As compared to lemon and lime.
Crossover - A fanfic between two or more characters from different fanfiction universes. (The Jetsons meet the Flintstones would be a crossover)
Doujinshi - Manga produced by fans or newbies, usually in limited print. Sometimes contains yaoi or yuri, or even just plain-old slash. Most of the time, doujinshi is fanwork, but there is some original floating around.
Fanfiction - Fiction written in a world created by someone other than the writer.
Femslash - A form of slash that involves two females.
FF - Final Fantasy. Usually followed by a number, indicating which Final Fantasy it is.
Hiatus - On break. Used for fics and websites, as in "On Hiatus." This means that the website or fic is up and running, but not being worked on for an undetermined amount of time.
Hentai - Roughly translates as "pervert" in Japanese. Also a slang name for a lemon fic.
Het - Slang for heterosexual.
Lemon - A fic containing extreme sex. Basically, porn with a point.
Lime - A fic containing slightly less extreme sex. Softcore porn with a point.
Novelization - A rewritten version of a script into story form, especially applicable for video games.
OOC - Out Of Character.
Parody - A style of writing where the characters speak and almost nothing else is written.
POV - Point Of View.
PWP - Acronym for Plot? What Plot? A story written as an excuse to put two characters together and have sex.
R&R - Read and Review.
Rambles - A fic written in parody format, which makes little sense and was written for the sole purpose of humor. Usually includes various forms of self-insertion.
RPS - Real Person based Story. When a writer takes a real person and writes a fic about them. Mostly illegal.
Self-Insertion - When an author places herself in a fanfic in order to "meet" the characters of a specific fanworld.
Seme - The dominant partner in a yaoi pairing.
Shoujo - Translates into "girl" in Japanese.
Shounen - Translates into "boy" in Japanese.
Shounen-Ai - Translates into "boy love" in Japanese. Softcore yaoi, without the sex.
Slash - When two characters are put together for the sole purpose of sexual encounter. Most slashfics are yaoi or yuri (sometimes called femslash), although, there is a separate genre of slash that is completely het. There are some slashfics which have a point, and are very well written, but for the most part, they are PWP. Most slashfics do not involve Asian-created or anime characters. There is no formula to slash at all. Usually, there is no dominant or submissive character, or if there is, it is hard to define.
Spoilers - A fanfic or review that gives away major portions of a storyline to something. May spoil the plot for someone who has not yet read, played, or watched the subject matter before.
Songfic - Short for "songfiction." A fic that is wrapped around or involves a song. This can be a song "borrowed" from another artist or a song written by the author herself.
Uke - The submissive partner in a yaoi pairing.
Vidfic - Short for "videofiction." A fic which involves taking a situation, character, or scenario, and creating a music video to a song with it. This usually involves a song "borrowed" from another artist, but sometimes involves original songs.
Yaoi - Yaoi is a very popular form of male homosexual fanfiction. It is an ancronym for the Japanese phrase "Yamanashi, Ochinashi, Iminashi," which is roughly translated as meaning "No climax, No conclusion, No meaning." Yaoi his highly formulaic, and involves taking two, usually established, male characters and putting them together. There is a dominant (seme) partner, who acts very masculine, and a submissive (uke), who acts more feminine. Yaoi is very popular in Japan, especially with females.
YKYL_TMW - Short for "You Know You Like ___ Too Much When..." Very popular for websites. Fill in the blank with a favorite character, video game, TV show, brand name, ect.
Yuri - Yuri is yaoi, but with two females homosexuals. The same rules apply for formula. Yuri is not as established in Japan as yaoi is, and most yuri fans are male.
